American Open

Justin “Moppy” Brimhall, one of my favorite people of all time, lifted well at 77k. Conservative in the snatch with 3 successes at 115, 120, and 123. I made the call for 123 on the last attempt and kicked myself in the rear after watching him do it. He was capable of 125 or more. Clean and jerks opened with 152 for an easy lift, then 158 for a miss. He miss-timed the catch on the clean and had to double bounce it. Anyone familiar with Justin will know that he CANNOT hold that bar on the chest for too long or he gets dizzy. Thats just what happened, missed jerk because he was blacking out. The third attempt with 158 was perfect and looked like 160+ would have gone easily. He got 4th place.

Trey Goodwin continued his comeback with a 3rd place finish. 135 and 140 went easily in the snatch, 143 was a miss. Pulled well, but he just didnt snap under. This was not a representation of what he can do. 150 is possible in the near future. He went 3 for 3 in the clean and jerk, 155, 160, and 165, all solid successes.

James Moser in the 105kg class snatched 150 solidly and then missed 160 twice. He was close, but not as close as I have seen him in training. 150 was a new schoolage national record. He opened with an easy 175 clean and jerk, then missed 182 standing up on his second. On his third with 182, he made one of the most beautiful Clean and Jerks that I have ever seen. A combination of effeciency and using all the bounce his body and the bar could provide, and the kind of fight and determination holding and balancing the jerk that is rarely, very rarely seen even on the international level. A very solid lift right up to getting the down signal, when he dropped the bar from just a bit over waist height. On a controversial call he got a 2-1 decision to turn down the lift from the referees. He still made a Schoolage record total and placed 3rd.

Donny Shankle bombed in the snatch with 163. There were a lot of factors here, some of it rests on Donnys shoulders, some does not. He was ready for an American record 173, but it was not to be. The clean and jerk was just about as disapointing, with a repeat needed to get the 190 opener, and 205 not going on the 3rd. Donny WILL break the American records in the 105 class soon, not just the snatch but the snatch and the clean and jerk and the total.
